Abstract: COVID-19 has deeply disrupted the relationships between hospice volunteer and their clients.  In this presentation we share findings from a qualitative exploration of the experiences of clients and volunteers of virtual volunteering in the COVID-19 context.

Abstract: The RHE-SETS team conducted an online survey in summer 2020 to gather information about the challenges rural living people are facing during COVID-19 and how technology is being used. Over 270 people participated in the survey. Top priorities and frequently described challenges are presented.

These projects honour diverse forms of knowledge and experiences; promote intergenerational and cross-cultural community connectivity; and valorize the contributions of those who have traditionally been marginalised or excluded from health-related arts-based qualitative research.

Colour outside the lines: Compassion in the 21st century

Abstract: The context of health care has changed dramatically in contemporary times within our resource constrained, high-paced and economically driven healthcare systems. As a result, receiving and providing compassion is increasingly challenged, with the proliferation of opinions on compassion overshadowing actual research on the topic within healthcare. Colour outside the lines is an opportunity for a collective unlearning of what we have come to know about compassion by providing an overview of patient informed research conducted within the Compassion Research Lab in order to determine what compassion is, what it isn’t, how it can be measured and how one of the oldest ways of caring can be revitalized into the 21st century.

Abstract The presentation focuses on the Advance Care Planning Capacity Building project underway to help people prepare for their future needs.  A review of the development of the Pan-Canadian Framework and new resources for lawyers and the general public is made and Advance Care Planning public awareness campaigns and special projects are also shared.

Assessing the quality of community-based palliative care: Perspectives from families, decision makers and researchers

Abstract  To address the need for a standardized method to assess quality of palliative care in Canada, a three-year project was launched to develop and test a set of quality indicators for community-based palliative care. Preliminary results are discussed in this presentation.

Healthy adult aging and balance: Where do we stand?

Abstract  Approximately one out of every four older people encounter a fall per year, which can lead to serious injury. Balance is an important aspect for activities of independent, daily living. This talk explores an overview of the underlying causes of age-related falls risks and discuss potential factors that may enhance standing balance control.

Muscle fatigue: Does age impact performance?

Abstract  Fatigue that develops within muscles during physical activity can impact quality of daily living, particularly in older adults. This presentation covers an overview of age-related changes to the nervous and muscular systems and the effects on muscle fatigue. Data from a recent UBCO study investigating the differences in muscle fatigue for males and females across the human lifespan is also be presented.

New frontiers at end-of-life: Evidence on Canadian nurses’ experience with Medical Assistance in Dying

Abstract  A team of Canadian nursing research and policy leaders, supported by an international  group of co-investigators, undertook a three-year study (2017 – 2020) of Canadian nurses’ experience with MAiD. The findings from nurses who were interviewed about their thoughts and experiences of this new end-of-life option are presented.
