Current Positions and Affiliations:

  • Assistant Professor, Department of Biology and Physical Geography, Irving K. Barber School of Arts & Sciences, UBC Okanagan
  • Canadian Diabetes Association Scholar
  • Michael Smith Health Research Foundation Scholar (2014 - 2019)

Areas of Research Interest:

Biochemical aspects of dietary fats and exercise in preventing the development and complications of obesity and diabetes with a focus on:

  • Dietary fats: Dietary saturated, omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids and their molecular effects on the cardiovascular system and pancreatic islets
  • Exercise: Effects of aerobic activity in processes involving redox regulation, cellular pathophysiology, metabolic derangements, cell-signaling

Current Research Related to the Institute's Priorities:

  • Role of milk fat in promoting healthy gut flora and preventing heart disease in the next generation
Funded by: Dairy Farmers of Canada, 2013 - 2015
  • Cardiac oxidative stress in diet induced obesity: Role of polyunsaturated fatty acids
Funded by: Canadian Diabetes Association, 2012 - 2015

  • Maternal dietary intake alters offspring’s disease risk: Mom’s dietary lipid intake can increase their offspring’s susceptibility to enteric infectious disease.
Funded by: Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, 2011 - 2012
  • Cardiolipotoxicity of omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids in diabetes
This project will try to identify ways in which changes to our diet may mitigate risk factors associated with cardiovascular comorbidities in diabetes.
    Funded by: Canadian Diabetes Association
  • Regulation of cardiac antioxidant levels by diet and exercise in diabetes
The aim of this project is to identify ways to reduce mitochondrial oxidative damage via diet and exercise among diabetics.
